Making History: Workplace Rights for Menopause

On June 24, 2025, Rhode Island became the first state in the nation to expressly require employers to provide workplace accommodations for individuals experiencing menopause. This groundbreaking legislation, signed by Governor Daniel McKee (House Bill No. 6161), marks a new era for women in the workforce.

Key Legislative Highlights

  - Interactive Accommodation: Employers must engage in a good-faith process to identify reasonable support for symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats.

 - Broad Protections: Rights are guaranteed even if the condition is not classified as a "disability."

 - Mandatory Awareness: Organizations must now post written notices advising employees of their right to be free from discrimination.

This shift in Rhode Island law signals a vital change in how we value maturing professionals. At Waterspill Junction, we believe that menopause is not an ending, but a transition that deserves respect, support, and legal protection.
